The 14-Year-Old Who Wants to Send Robots to the Battlefield Instead of Soldiers

At just 14 years old, Hu Dongping, a student at The Affiliated High School of South China Normal University, has already accumulated dozens of national awards and more than a hundred municipal and provincial honors. In 2025, he was named a “New Era Good Youth,” a title recognizing outstanding young role models in China.


But statistics alone fail to capture the deeper story.


Hu does not invent for competition. He invents because he cannot tolerate unsolved suffering.



The Seed: Protecting Lives Through Machines



Influenced by his father from an early age, Hu once dreamed of defending his country as a soldier. Yet even as a child, he understood the brutality of war. If battlefields are dangerous, he reasoned, why not let robots take the highest risks instead of human beings?


At five, he began systematically studying robotics and programming. By nine, he unveiled his first formal invention: a student road-safety robot named “Xiaobei.”


To Hu, innovation divorced from real-world needs is lifeless. Creativity is not a flash of inspiration, he believes, but the result of disciplined study and long accumulation. His bedroom floor is often covered in books — politics, military history, science, technology. Once, at an event, he became so engrossed in discussing military theory with a university professor that he nearly missed his turn to speak. The professor later remarked in astonishment: “I never expected a teenager to possess such depth of military knowledge.”


Hu sketches his designs directly in ink — no pencil drafts, no eraser marks. The confidence to draw without correction, he says, comes from long preparation.



Technology with Dignity



His most transformative invention emerged from family hardship.


Six years ago, his grandfather was bedridden with lung cancer, and his grandmother became paralyzed after a car accident. Bathing them safely required two adults. The difficulty and loss of dignity haunted him.


“In China, tens of millions of elderly and disabled individuals face this same problem,” he observed. “Many endure embarrassment simply because they cannot bathe comfortably.”


After a year of research — visiting hospitals, interviewing caregivers, testing five structural prototypes — Hu developed a bath-bed robot that integrates a bathtub with a hospital bed. It eliminates the need to lift patients and can be operated by a single caregiver at low cost. The design has since obtained a utility patent and entered industrialization.


His guiding principle is consistent: technology must revolve around human need.


During the COVID-19 pandemic, he developed a home delivery-disinfection robot capable of sanitizing packages and climbing stairs. After observing campus safety incidents, he designed a modular emergency rescue station suitable for schools and public squares. Seeing classmates struggle with heavy backpacks, he engineered a stair-climbing backpack robot that runs along handrails without requiring structural modifications — a solution that also helps elderly individuals carrying groceries.


One of his most unusual inventions, called “Gui De Yi” (“Kneel with Ease”), was inspired by rehabilitation therapists, surgeons, and manual workers who spend hours kneeling on hard floors. The device distributes pressure ergonomically and allows motion control while kneeling, freeing both hands for work. It is now being used in rehabilitation centers and operating rooms.



Failure as Curriculum



Innovation, however, has not been seamless.


Shortly before a competition, Hu discovered that the triangular load-bearing structure of his backpack robot malfunctioned due to interference from stair railings. Instead of abandoning the project, he obsessively reworked the design, consulting teachers and poring over engineering journals. The final solution — combining an external hook-bearing system with internal guide-wheel support — stabilized the robot’s ascent.


“The keywords of innovation are hardship and setbacks,” he reflects. “But when your invention truly helps someone, the effort becomes meaningful.”


He has since won top honors at major national youth science competitions, including China’s most prestigious innovation awards for young scientists. Yet he insists competitions are not about victory, but exposure — meeting brilliant minds, absorbing new ideas.



Responsibility Beyond Achievement



Hu began donating his allowance to sick children at age eight. Today, he contributes a significant portion of his prize money to charity.


“To be born in this era is a privilege,” he says. “If you have the ability, you should give back.”


Outside the lab, he mentors younger students, participates in science forums and cultural exchanges, and speaks frequently about integrating patriotism with technological progress.


Currently, he is working on a confidential drone project aimed at addressing modern military challenges such as signal interference and limited endurance.


His dream remains unchanged: to use robotics and artificial intelligence not merely to innovate — but to protect.
