 The Current Situation, Strengths and Weaknesses of Advanced Manufacturing in Taiwan

Since 2011, Apple has announced its own supplier list every year. As manufacturing practitioners, we actually focus on two points. One is how many local companies in mainland China account for it. The other is where in the world these suppliers are located.

Let me first talk about why we pay attention to how many local companies in mainland China account for. This figure is very important because it directly reflects the technical level and status of local companies in mainland China in Apple's supply chain.

Apple announced its top 200 global suppliers in October 2022. The list of suppliers published each year is calculated based on the previous year's sales. It is said that there are 200 major suppliers. In fact, the total number announced by Apple is not less than 200, but 190.

Among Apple's top 200 global suppliers in 2022, there are 46 in mainland China + Hong Kong, and 46 in Taiwan, ranking first in terms of quantity.

Adding up the number of Chinese suppliers, it can account for about 50% of Apple's suppliers, exceeding the proportion of suppliers in Japan, South Korea, and the United States. From this point, we can see how dependent Apple is on Chinese suppliers.

But today, we will focus on the level of advanced manufacturing in Taiwan, as well as their advantages and existing problems.

Why you should pay attention to Taiwan's advanced manufacturing industry

In 2022, Taiwan will be the largest source of trade deficit in mainland China, and it will be far ahead of all trading partners in the world. The data on cross-strait trade is as follows.

In 2019, China's imports from Taiwan were US$173 billion. By 2022, China's imports from Taiwan will be US$238.09 billion, showing a sharp increase.

At the same time, mainland China’s trade deficit with Taiwan has risen from US$117.92 billion in 2019 to US$156.5 billion, which has also increased significantly (trade deficit-mainland China imports more products from Taiwan than it exports).

China's second largest trade deficit in 2022 will be Australia, the third largest will be Brazil, and the fourth largest will be Russia, all of which are smaller than Taiwan. More imports mean that the manufacturing industry is highly dependent on the region's supply chain.

As mentioned earlier, the distribution of factories of Apple’s top 200 suppliers in the world in 2022, there are at least 72 factories in the Apple supply chain in Taiwan that provide parts and components for Apple, and these products are ultimately assembled in mainland China.

Not only Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Lenovo and other companies all use a large number of parts and components produced in this region. Not only is the chip industry developed in Taiwan, but passive components such as resistors and capacitors are also produced in large quantities.

Mainland China's trade deficit with Taiwan and its dependence on Taiwan's supply chain are the most important reasons why we should pay attention to Taiwan's manufacturing industry.

The current development level of advanced manufacturing in Taiwan

The scale of a country's manufacturing industry can be seen from the added value of the manufacturing industry. As of today, many economies have not released data for the entire year of 2022, so let's look at the data for 2021 first.

In 2021, the added value of manufacturing industry ranks tenth in the world in Russia, and the added value of Taiwan's manufacturing industry ranks eleventh in the world. Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia's manufacturing industry has poor prospects for development, so Taiwan is likely to become one of the top ten manufacturing economies in the world.

If we look at the proportion of Taiwan's manufacturing industry in GDP, we will find that it is much higher than other developed economies in the world.

In 2021, the manufacturing industry in Taiwan will account for as much as 32.88% of its GDP, while the manufacturing industry in mainland China will account for 27.4% of GDP in the same year. The manufacturing industry accounts for 18%-20% of GDP in Germany and Japan, and even lower in Britain, France, and the United States.

Not only that, the ratio of Taiwan's manufacturing industry to GDP has been rising in the past ten years. From 28.27% in 2011 to 32.88% in 2021.

If the industry is included (including manufacturing, gas, electricity, water supply and other industries), Taiwan's industrial added value will account for 37.95% of GDP in 2021. In the same year, the industrial added value of mainland China will account for 32.58% of GDP. .

A strong manufacturing industry driven by the chip industry

It is well known that Taiwan has mastered high-tech products centered on chips and a strong electronics manufacturing industry.

From the analysis of Apple's industrial chain, it has the world's most advanced chip manufacturing industry and most of the world's chip foundry production capacity. Not only that, it also has developed electronic foundry companies and electronic component companies.

Even today, Taiwan-based companies are still the largest exporters in many regions of mainland China, such as Shanxi Province, Henan Province, Jiangsu Province, Sichuan Province, Shanghai, and Chongqing.

Among them, the largest exporter in Shanxi, Henan, and Sichuan is the Taiwanese company Foxconn, and the largest exporter in Jiangsu Province is Taiwan Mingshuo in Suzhou, which mainly produces notebook computers.

The largest exporter in Shanghai and Chongqing is also a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, Dafeng Computer, which mainly produces notebook computers.

Although the largest exporter in Guangdong Province is Huawei, Foxconn ranks second; the largest exporter in Shandong Province is Hisense, but Yantai Foxconn also ranks second.

It can be seen from this how much influence Taiwan's manufacturing industry has on the foundry companies and employment in mainland China.

As an economy, the Taiwan area is small and has few human resources, but it can make full use of the human resources in mainland China and set up OEM enterprises in the mainland. This allows it to master the ability to manage large factories with hundreds of thousands of people or even millions of people through a small number of management.

Usually we think that the foundry is an assembly plant, with low profit margins and no technical content. This is only one aspect. However, if the scale of the foundry is large enough, the total scale will form a kind of competitiveness.

The production capacity is large, and the requirements for supply chain management capabilities are high. This capability can also allow Taiwanese companies to establish large-scale manufacturing capacity in Vietnam and India. This is also one of the reasons why Taiwanese companies have always stood at the top of the global electronics foundry in these years.

Weaknesses of Taiwan's Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing industry accounts for a high proportion of GDP, and the largest export companies in many regions of mainland China are Taiwanese companies. These are the advantages of Taiwan's manufacturing industry. What are the weaknesses?

If you study the market capitalization of Taiwan's stock market, you will find that the manufacturing industry in this region is actually very single. The data are as follows.

Judging from the market value of Taiwan stocks at the close on March 7, 2023, TSMC is the company with the highest market value in Taiwan. The market value of a company accounts for 27.58% of the entire stock market, more than a quarter.

This figure far exceeds that of Hon Hai Group (the parent company of Foxconn), which is the second largest manufacturer of electronic products. Hon Hai's market value accounts for 2.95% of Taiwan's stock market.

At the same time, the companies ranked third, eighth, and thirteenth in market capitalization in Taiwan's stock market are MediaTek, UMC, and ASE. These three companies are leaders in the chip industry.

In addition to the chip industry, what else does Taiwan's manufacturing industry rely on to support it?

The top non-chip companies in Taiwan by market capitalization are shown in the figure above. Among them, there are four companies in the top 16, Formosa Plastics Petrochemical, Nanya Group, Formosa Plastics Group, and Formosa Chemicals Corporation. They are all petrochemical companies and belong to Formosa Plastics. Enterprise groups, their combined market value accounts for more than 5% of Taiwan stocks, which is much higher than the 2.95% of the second-ranked Hon Hai Group.

From this ranking, it can be seen that in addition to financial companies, the manufacturing industry in Taiwan is Taiwan’s chip industry led by TSMC, MediaTek, UMC and ASE, and the electronic product manufacturing industry centered on electronic foundry, as well as the Formosa Plastics Group. The plastic petrochemical industry is the representative, and other industries are actually relatively small in scale.

For example, Giant Bicycle is a world-renowned brand. The huge group that owns this brand has an annual operating income of 20 billion yuan, while the Uni-President Group in the food industry has mainly operated in mainland China.

It can be seen that only the high-tech content of the chip industry is relatively prominent, while in other industries with large volume and high technology content, such as automobile manufacturing, aerospace manufacturing, medical equipment and pharmaceutical industries, etc., there are no strong Taiwanese companies. Industrial simplification is a major hidden danger of Taiwan's advanced manufacturing.

Cross-strait industrial competition

Innolux and AU Optronics in Taiwan export a large number of display panels to mainland China, and BOE and CVTE are already able to produce these products themselves, and these are bound to be gradually replaced.

For example, passive components in the electronics industry: electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, and inductors are actually Japanese companies with the most advanced level, Taiwan companies are at the middle level, and mainland Chinese companies are at the middle and lower level.

Electronic brand manufacturers in mainland China are bound to support local passive component companies to gradually replace Taiwan-based products through tilting orders.

Of course, there are also various major electronic OEMs, which will gradually replace Taiwan's major OEMs at different levels.

For products that are difficult to replace in the short term, such as advanced process technology chips manufactured by TSMC, on the one hand, mainland companies are investing in research and development, and on the other hand, mainland China needs to prepare inventory plans to prevent ZTE from being cut off by the US chip supply in 2018 and business shock situation happened again.

It can be seen that the simplification of industries is a major hidden danger for Taiwan. If mainland China can make breakthroughs in the high-tech chip industry, improve the competitiveness of the electronic foundry industry, and gradually replace Taiwanese products with local products, it will have a negative impact on Taiwan. The manufacturing industry has had a considerable impact.

Of course, from the perspective of energy and information, the most important areas for advanced manufacturing in mainland China today are actually the manufacturing in Vietnam and India that we will talk about later. 台湾先进制造的现状,优势与弱点

从2011年开始,苹果公司每年都会公布自己的供应商名单,作为制造业从业人员我们重点看的其实就两点,一是中国大陆的本土公司在其中占了多少家。另一个是这些供应商分别在全球什么地方。
先说为什么关注中国大陆本土公司占了多少家。这个数字非常重要,因为它直接反映了中国大陆本土公司在苹果供应链的技术水平和地位。
苹果在2022年10月公布了自己的全球200大供应商。每年发布的供应商名单,都是根据前一年的销售额来计算的。说是200大供应商,其实苹果公布的总数并不到200家,而是190家。
2022年的苹果全球200大供应商,中国大陆+香港地区是46家,台湾地区也是46家,在数量上并列第一。

把中国供应商的数量加在一起,能够占到苹果供应商的50%左右,超过了日本、韩国、美国的供应商占比。从这一点上,可以看出苹果对中国供应商的依赖程度。

但是今天,我们重点看下台湾地区先进制造业发展到什么水平,以及它们的优势和存在的问题。

为什么要关注台湾先进制造业
2022年,台湾地区是中国大陆最大的贸易逆差来源地,在全球所有贸易伙伴中遥遥领先第二名,两岸贸易的数据如下。
2019年中国大陆从台湾地区进口金额为1730亿美元,到了2022年中国大陆从台湾地区进口金额为2380.9亿美元,出现了大幅度的上升。
同时,中国大陆对台的贸易逆差,从2019年的1179.2亿美元上升到了1565亿美元,也出现了大幅度的上涨(贸易逆差——中国大陆从台湾地区进口的产品多过出口)。
中国大陆在2022年的第二大贸易逆差是澳大利亚,第三大是巴西,第四大俄罗斯,这三个加起来都小于台湾地区。进口多,意味着制造业对该地区的供应链依赖度则高。
前面讲到苹果公司2022年全球200大供应商的工厂分布,在台湾地区就至少有72个苹果供应链的工厂为苹果公司提供零部件产品,而这些产品最终都是在中国大陆组装。
不光苹果,华为、小米、OPPO、vivo、联想等公司都有大量使用该地区生产的零部件产品。台湾地区不仅是芯片产业发达,像电阻、电容这样的被动元件也有大量生产。
中国大陆对台的贸易逆差,还有对台湾地区供应链的依赖度,就是我们要关注台湾制造业的最重要原因。

台湾先进制造目前的发展水平
从制造业增加值可以看出一个国家制造业的规模,截至今天很多经济体还没有公布2022年整年的数据,所以先看2021年的数据。
2021年制造业增加值排名全球第十位的是俄罗斯,台湾地区的制造业增加值排在全球第11位。由于俄乌战争,俄罗斯的制造业发展前景不好,所以台湾地区很有可能成为全球十大制造业经济体之一。
如果我们看台湾地区制造业占GDP的比重,会发现远远高于全球其他发达经济体。
2021年,台湾地区制造业占它GDP比例高达32.88%,而同一年中国大陆制造业占GDP的比重是27.4%。德国和日本的制造业占GDP的比重是18%-20%,英国、法国、美国就更低了。
不仅如此,台湾地区制造业占GDP的比例在过去的十余年里是在不断上升的。从2011年的28.27%上升到了2021年的32.88%。
如果把工业计算进来(包括制造业,还有燃气、电力、供水等产业)台湾地区2021年的工业增加值的GDP占比是37.95%,同一年,中国大陆工业增加值占GDP比例是32.58%。

芯片产业带动下的强大制造业
众所周知台湾地区掌握了以芯片为中心的高科技产品和强大的电子制造业。
从苹果产业链去分析,它拥有全球最先进的芯片制造业和全球大部分的芯片代工产能,不仅如此,它还有发达的电子代工企业以及电子零部件企业。
即使今天,中国大陆很多地区第一大出口企业任是台企,比如山西省、河南省、江苏省、四川省、上海市、重庆市。
其中山西、河南、四川的第一大出口企业都是台湾企业富士康,江苏省第一大出口企业则是位于苏州的台湾名硕,主要生产笔记本电脑,。
上海市和重庆市的第一大出口企业也是主要生产笔记本电脑的台湾代加工企业,达丰电脑。
虽然广东省第一大出口企业是华为,但富士康排在第二位;山东省第一大出口企业是海信,但烟台富士康也排在第二位。
从这可以看出来,台湾地区制造业对中国大陆的代工企业和就业有多大的影响。
台湾地区作为经济体,尽管地方小、人力资源少,但是可以充分利用中国大陆的人力资源,在大陆设置代工企业。这让它掌握了通过少量的管理层就可以管理几十万人,甚至上百万人大型工厂的能力。
通常我们认为代工厂就是组装厂,利润率低,没有技术含量,这只是一方面。但是,如果代工厂的规模足够大,规模总量也就形成一种竞争力。
产能大,对供应链管理能力的要求则高,这种能力同样可以让台企在越南和印度,也建立规模庞大的制造业产能。这也是这些年,台企始终站在全球电子代工顶峰的原因之一。

台湾制造业的弱点
制造业占GDP比重高,中国陆很多地区的第一大出口企业都是台企,这些都是台湾制造业的优势,那弱点是什么?
研究台湾地区的股市市值,会发现此地区制造业产业其实非常单一化,数据如下。
以台股2023年3月7日收盘时的市值来看,台积电是台湾市值最高的公司,一家公司的市值占据整个股市27.58%,超过四分之一。
这数字远远超过第二名做电子产品代工的鸿海集团(富士康母公司)。鸿海的市值占台湾股市的2.95%。
同时,台湾股市市值排名第三、第八、第十三的企业,分别是联发科、联电、日月光,这三家公司都是芯片行业的领军企业。
除了芯片产业,台湾制造业还靠什么支撑?
台湾市值排名靠前的非芯片公司有如上图所示,其中前16名有四家公司,台塑石化、南亚集团、台塑集团、台化公司,都是石化类的企业,均隶属台塑企业集团,它们的市值加在一起,占到了台股的5%以上,比排名第二的鸿海集团2.95%高了不少。
由此排名可以看出台湾地区的制造业除了金融类公司之外,就是以台积电、联发科、联电和日月光为首的台湾芯片产业,和电子代工为中心的电子产品制造业,以及台塑企业集团为代表的塑胶石化工业,其他的产业其实规模相对都比较小。
像捷安特自行车,属于世界知名品牌,拥有该品牌的巨大集团一年营业收入200亿人民币,而食品行业的统一集团经营已经主要在中国大陆。
可见只有芯片产业的高技术含量相对突出,而在其他领域体量大、技术含量高的产业,比如汽车制造、航空航天制造、医疗器械和制药业等等,都没有强大的台企存在。产业单一化是台湾先进制造的一大隐患。

两岸产业竞争
台湾地区的群创光电、友达光电向中国大陆大量出口显示面板,而该产品中京东方,视源等已完全可以自产,这些势必会被逐步被替换。
而比如电子行业的被动元件:电容、电阻、电感这些电子元器件,水平最为先进的实际上是日本公司,台湾公司处于中游水平,中国大陆公司处于中下游水平。
中国大陆的电子品牌厂家势必会通过订单倾斜,来扶持本土被动元件企业逐渐替代台系产品。
当然还有各个电子代工大厂,都是会逐步从不同层次实现对于台湾代工大厂的替代。
对短期内难以做到替代的产品,比如台积电制造的先进制程工艺芯片,一方面大陆企业正在投入研发,另一方面中国大陆需要做好库存预案,防止2018年中兴被美国芯片断供而业务休克的情况再次发生。
可见产业单一化是台湾的一大隐患,如果中国大陆能够在高科技含量的芯片产业有所突破,提升电子代工产业的竞争力,逐步用本土产品对台系产品进行替代,会对台湾地区的制造业带来不小的影响。
当然,如果从能量与信息的角度出发,今天中国大陆先进制造业最应该关注的区域其实是我们后面要说的越南与印度的制造,过度关注台湾地区的问题或许回过头会发现丢了西瓜捡芝麻。
