这个结果就连设局的强盗都后悔了：“当初只是恨他报案，毁了两个兄弟，也让他吃几个月的官司，不怕不毁他一两千吊钱，谁知就闹得这么厉害，连伤了他四条人命，委实我同他家也没有这么大的仇怨。”

衙役们看着于家死得惨，又平白地受了吴氏一副金镯子，心里过意不去，就动了公愤，齐心协力要抓住强盗，破了这个案子。有些江湖上的英雄，也恨这伙强盗做得太毒，不到一个月，就抓住了五六个人，其中三四个牵扯到别的案情的，都站笼站死了，唯独只犯于家移赃一案的两三个人，都被玉大人给放了。

还有夫妻两个，只生了一个儿子，干个买卖，需要到府城去进货。这儿子多喝了两杯酒，在饭馆门口，就把玉大人怎样糊涂，怎样好冤枉人随口说，被玉大人心腹私访听见，抓进衙门，大人坐堂，只骂了一句：“你这东西谣言惑众，还了得吗？”站笼里两天就站死了。

玉大人的12个站笼居然也有全部空着的时候，那是因为做官的名声好，被上司保荐得到了道员的官缺，衙门口挂着红彩，停刑三日以示庆贺，站笼上几个半死不活的人，暂时收监。

作者借主人公的想法说：“槽州府的百姓，近几年的年月也就很不好，又有这么一个酷虐的父母官，动不动就捉了去当强盗待，用站笼站杀，吓得连一句话也说不出来，于饥寒之外，又多一层惧怕。岂不比这鸟雀还要苦吗！”玉大人却说：“这人无论冤枉不冤枉，若放下来，一定不能甘心，将来连我前程都保不住，俗语说得好，斩草除根，就是这个道理。”
