After the incident was exposed by the Japanese media, it attracted the attention of Japanese public opinion. Regarding the comments of "Time" magazine, many Japanese netizens mentioned that "Japan wants to become a military power" because of the pressure from the United States, and some Japanese netizens criticized the Japanese government's plan to use Criticism of tax hikes to increase defense spending. Some netizens commented, "The United States wants Japan to become a military power. Kishida is one of the world's most vulnerable leaders to the influence of the United States. As a reward, the United States put Kishida on the cover of "Time" magazine and told him to 'keep it up'".

In this context, according to NHK’s report on the 12th, Japanese Foreign Minister Lin Fangzheng defended the Kishida government’s policy at a press conference on the 12th, and also mentioned that the end of the "Time" report made a positive evaluation of Kishida, " It reflects the government's position stated by Kishida during the interview." In addition, with regard to the negotiations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and "Time" magazine, Lin Fangzheng said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told "Time" magazine that "there is a big gap between the cover title and the content." However, he declined to disclose further details of the negotiations. Tokyo Broadcasting Corporation (TBS) reported that sources revealed that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised "objections" to "Time" magazine.

NHK said that at present, "Time" magazine has revised the headline of the report on its website to "Prime Minister Fumio Kishida Let Japan, which was once a pacifist, play a more confident role on the global stage." Responding to NHK's request for comment, Time magazine said it had "updated the headlines and stories on the web page for various reasons," but that "the cover and story content of the forthcoming magazine has not changed."

The news that the Japanese government lodged representations with Time magazine sparked criticism on the Japanese Internet. Some netizens said, "(The original title) is right, you are trying to do this." ↓

Another said, "In other words, the headline changed from fact to falsehood". ↓

In addition, the Japanese opposition parties also criticized the Japanese government for this approach. Japan's Constitutional Democratic Party member Ichiro Ozawa's office tweeted, "It's really 'worthy' of you. Whether it is at home or abroad, the Liberal Democratic Party government is doing the same thing. This is ugly pressure through diplomatic channels Right. A government that cannot accept legitimate criticism. Can’t let them turn Japan into a disgraceful country.” ↓

Japanese Communist Party senator Yamazoto tweeted, "The Japanese government complained and asked the American magazine "Time" to change the title, making an excessive response of interfering with the title of a magazine. It seems that the government is concerned about the evaluation of 'military power'. This is the case. But doubling the military expenditure, gaining the ability to attack enemy bases that it never had before, and abandoning "exclusive defense" are all measures to become a military power." ↓

"Prime Minister Kishida appeared on the cover of the US "Time" magazine." On the 11th, many Japanese media reported the news intensively. The cover title and comments also became the focus of Japanese public opinion on this matter-"Japan's choice: Prime Minister Kishida Fumio wants to abandon decades of pacifism and make his country a real military power." Some Japanese netizens commented, "The United States wants Japan to become a military power. Kishida is one of the world's most vulnerable leaders to the influence of the United States." One. The cover featured a photo of Fumio Kishida, accompanied by a sentence: "Japan's choice: Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wants to abandon decades of pacifism and make his country a true military power."

This matter quickly attracted the attention of the Japanese media. Many Japanese media including Nippon TV, "Yomiuri Shimbun" and "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" reported that "Fumio Kishida wants to turn his country into a real military power." This TIME comment serves as the headline. Japanese TV said that the "Time" report focused on Kishida's substantial changes in Japan's security policy, a substantial increase in defense spending, and at the same time embarking on reforms in Japan's diplomatic relations. The report mentioned that "Time" commented in the report that the United States was eager to influence its partners to curb China's growing influence. Under the instigation of the White House, Kishida tried to make Japan, the world's third largest economy, "re-emerge as a country with its own economic status as a global power with matching military power”

Although some people on the Japanese Internet claim to support the practice of "turning Japan into a military power", many Japanese netizens think it is "terrible". Someone commented, "This is a terrible statement, but it does make people think that way."

Someone said, "Japanese people don't support (increased defense costs) at the cost of a substantial tax increase. Why would someone support such a thing? Are you a fool?"

Some Japanese netizens also criticized, "(The Kishida government) thought it was the stupid government before World War II, and it is really a traitorous cult Liberal Democratic Party."

Someone said, "In the end, it lost to the US's plot and pressure to promote arms expansion. Moreover, Japan lost its status as an economic power about 25 years ago."

On the other hand, some netizens sarcastically said, "Just by buying piles of American defective weapons, can you say that you want to become a 'real military power'? It's really 'making tea with your belly button'" (Editor's note: Japanese slang, used to describe absurdity nonsense)".

Some netizens also analyzed that, "The United States hopes that Japan will become a military power. Kishida is one of the leaders in the world who are most susceptible to the influence of the United States. As a reward, the United States put Kishida on the cover of "Time" magazine and told him to 'keep it up'."

It is worth noting that the US ambassador to Japan Emanuel tweeted in English and Japanese on the 10th and 11th respectively, "Congratulations to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for appearing in Time Magazine" and "look forward to his appearance at the Hiroshima Group of Seven next week." (G7) summit to demonstrate its leadership".

Regarding the recent changes in the Japanese government's security policy, in December 2022, the Japanese government passed three security policy documents, the new version of the "National Security Strategy", "National Defense Strategy" and "Defense Force Preparation Plan", stating that Japan will be committed to having Counterattack capability (attack capability against enemy bases), and plans to increase Japan's total defense expenditure to 2% of its gross domestic product (GDP), or 43 trillion yen (about 2.2 trillion yuan) within 5 fiscal years ). On February 28 this year, the Japanese government cabinet meeting passed the "Reciprocal Access Agreement" between Japan and the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia. The agreement will simplify the entry procedures for personnel, equipment and ammunition during joint military exercises between Japan and the United Kingdom, and Japan and Australia. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also recently stated at the Senate Budget Committee of the National Assembly that discussions on revising the "Three Principles of Defense Equipment Transfer" should be accelerated.

In addition, according to media reports in April, the Ministry of Defense of Japan signed a contract worth US$2.84 billion with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build a new type of missile force. "China Threat". Japan also plans to deploy hypersonic weapons in 2026, and strives to develop a submarine-launched hypersonic missile with a range of 3,000 kilometers in the first half of the 2030s.

In this regard, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated at a regular press conference that in recent years, Japan has repeatedly hyped up the "China threat", constantly breaking through the constraints of the "Peace Constitution" and its commitment to "exclusively defending defense", greatly increasing defense expenditures, and developing Offensive weapons, seeking to obtain "strike capabilities against the enemy", are going further and further along the road of military expansion. This sends a dangerous signal to countries in the region and the world that Japan is trying to subvert the post-war international order. The international community should remain highly vigilant against this. We strongly urge the Japanese government to deeply reflect on its history of aggression, earnestly respect the security concerns of its Asian neighbors, stick to "exclusive defense", adhere to the path of peaceful development, and act prudently in the field of military security.

Recently, the British "New Statesman" magazine interviewed former British Foreign Secretary Simon MacDonald on a series of hot topics such as the future of the United Kingdom, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Sino-US relations. However, Macdonald, a senior diplomat who has worked in the British foreign affairs department for 40 years, told the truth that even the reporters who interviewed him were surprised.

(Screenshot from an article in the British "New Statesman" magazine, the same below)

'Game over for the UK'

Why has the United Kingdom's performance in the international community become more and more crotch these years, and the leaders who were supposed to lead the country on the right path stepped down one by one in a short period of time, and behaved like clowns?

In an exclusive interview with The New Statesman, Macdonald spoke bluntly about this issue and pointed to the crux of it.

He said that the careers of British politicians have been greatly accelerated. In the past, after entering the British Parliament, a politician had to go through a long period of experience and accumulate enough experience to become a minister or even a leader. After just a few years in office, even without any experience, you can become a minister and even a leader who decides the fate of Britain.

At the same time, Macdonald also said that as far as the British foreign affairs department is concerned, the current British Foreign Secretary's focus on diplomatic work has also changed.

He took former British Prime Minister Truss, who once served as the British Foreign Secretary, as an example, saying that Truss is more concerned about how to manage her personal image through social accounts, so that she can gain enough popularity to become the British Conservative Party The leader of the party, so she is more concerned about which picture of herself looks better than British foreign policy.

However, MacDonald also said that the decline of Britain's international status in recent years is not just a matter of the recent foreign ministers, but also has deeper reasons, such as China, India, Japan, Brazil and Australia and other countries. The status has been greatly improved in the past 20 years, and the United Kingdom now has a population of only 70 million and the decision to leave the European Union a few years ago.

"The problem with the UK is that we still want to compete in national hard power, but we no longer have the resources to support that competition," he said.

As for Britain's current role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, such as providing weapons to Ukraine, etc., MacDonald believes that this is just a manifestation of Britain's remaining "soft power". He believes that the United Kingdom is now only a "soft power player" on the international stage. Although it can still attract the attention of the international community by training soldiers and providing weapons to Ukraine, it is no longer the same as when he first entered the British foreign affairs department in the 1980s. In that way, not only has nearly 100 warships, but also can independently launch a war like the Falklands Sea Battle.

Today, Britain has less than 40 warships, and it has basically become a follower of the US military.

"Should not be an enemy of China"

But even in the area of soft power, Britain's prospects are not looking good.

Macdonald said that before the UK left the EU, the EU could serve as a strategic direction for itself. But after Brexit, the only way for the UK to follow the United States is now. Moreover, the United Kingdom itself lacks interest in other options. For example, it does not want to become a close partner with China, and feels that it is meaningless to mix with other English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, because it cannot affect the international situation.

In MacDonald’s view, he believes that the way out for Britain should be not to follow the United States together with other medium-sized countries, for example, it should no longer follow the United States to fight wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that are meaningless to Britain, and it should not be an enemy of China Or send warships to the Indo-Pacific region or even the South China Sea.

In particular, MacDonald believes that Taiwan will be a test of whether Britain can choose a new worldview, and a test of how Britain develops its relationship with the United States. He also specifically mentioned that when the United States fought the Vietnam War, the United Kingdom did not send troops to Vietnam.

In addition, he Macdonald also boldly stated that the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is inseparable from the United States' plan to let Georgia and Ukraine gradually join NATO, because this approach is regarded as a hostile act by Russia, while the United Kingdom is considered by the United States. rolled in.

"The United States will not go to war with China, but what about the future?"

Finally, MacDonald talked about whether the United States will go to war with China.

He said that he is very sure that the United States will not go to war with China at present, because whether it is the US Secretary of State Blinken or the CIA Director Burns, these senior officials responsible for US security issues know that the consequences of a war with China will be a "strategic disaster." ".

But he reminded again: But Burns also has to leave one day...

Image

Image
