第一便是案发现场的那半截辫子。清朝对于辫子的把控很严，当初满清铁骑入关后，为了让汉人降服，直接发布了“留头不留发，留发不留头”的剃发令。除了僧侣之外，所有男人都必须留有大辫子。普通人没有辫子，根本不敢出门。为了服务大众，一些商铺做起了假辫子批发的生意。既然这个罪犯被割断了辫子，那他必定要去购买假发。从这一点着手，应该会有收获。
第二，杀死孙寡妇的那把刀，从花纹上看，乃是鸳鸯刀。所谓“鸳鸯刀”，通常都有一雄一雌两把。留在案发现场的，应该是其中的雄刀。若能找到雌刀，也能抓到犯罪分子。

公堂之上，赵德辄审问王定邦：“大胆刁民，还不从实招来，快说你是如何杀死孙寡妇的?”只见王定邦摇头晃脑，用手指指自己的嘴，呜呜咽咽说不清楚。乡邻也感到奇怪，这王定邦之前还巧舌如簧，为何今日却突然不能说话了?尽管王定邦不能说话，但也不耽误赵德辄审案。他命人拿那半截断发与王定邦的发辫做比对，发现完全一致，正是他的辫子。
除此之外，衙役们还从王定邦家中搜出了鸳鸯刀中的另一把雌刀。种种证据都指向了王定邦，他应该是杀人凶手没跑了。赵德辄当堂宣读了王定邦的罪状，让他签字画押。王定邦因为无法说话，也只好认罪。赵德辄将此案上报刑部后，王定邦被判秋后处斩。后来，赵德辄因为政绩出色，官运亨通，一路升迁至江苏巡抚。
案情反转
但事情真有这么简单么?其实并没有。尽管赵德辄能力出众，但还是敌不过一些布案经验丰富的老手。他还是被人骗了过去。而真正的幕后凶手，实际上是楚孙氏和她的父亲孙止宜。
楚孙氏是当地远近闻名的一位美女，嫁给了当地一位秀才为妻。夫妻二人感情和睦，生活得很是幸福。但她没想到，自己却被恶少王定邦给盯上。王定邦一直以来都是游手好闲，无所事事。在一次见到楚孙氏后，便得了相思症。疯魔起来，竟偷偷跑到楚孙氏家房外，偷听人家夫妻二人行房之事。
为了将楚孙氏弄到手，王定邦暗中跟踪了她很久。后来发现楚孙氏与当地的孙寡妇交好，王定邦便软磨硬泡，搞定了孙寡妇。在拿下孙寡妇后，王定邦开口求她成全自己与楚孙氏的好事。孙寡妇也是女人，醋意大发，自然不肯。但王定邦却说自己得了相思之症，如果不答应他，他恐怕将命不久矣。孙寡妇守寡多年，久旱逢甘霖，好不容易有人能陪伴自己，也舍不得王定邦死，便决定破例帮他一次。
